Geyser Conservation
September 19th, 2007 Posted in Geyser Conservation
Some people get a kick out of throwing things down geyser vents and watching them shoot up in the air on the next eruption. Some folks toss coins in the vents for good luck. Please educate those around you not to throw coins, trash, rocks, limbs or anything else into geyser vents. They plug up the geysers and there is not much park rangers can do to get the debris out if it gets stuck. Also, remind people not to take souvenirs of sinter from the geysers or walk on geyser cones.
There are only around a thousand geysers left in the world and we need to preserve them. Geyser conservation is necessary to protect these rare geothermic features for those who follow us. Let’s encourage others to be good stewards of these mystical fountains.

Maybe someone should tell folks that throwing stuff ingeysers is not part of conservation. This site seems to encorage it.
